運用慣用語 說話更地道(一)

所謂諺語,一般都是以口語形式留傳下來的通俗易懂短句,反映了人民生活的實踐經驗。一些常用的諺語,我們當然耳熟能詳,然而不少中文諺語,也有相對應的英語諺語(proverbs),其意思有異曲同工之妙。香港學生學習英語有時過分一板一眼,如大家能靈活運用一些諺語,相信你的英語將會變得更地道及生活化,是在口試考取高分的一大捷徑。以下是一些英語口試時常用的例子,希望大家能好好地掌握運用。

 

Give him an inch and he’ll take a yard/ mile得寸進尺    

得寸進尺的意思是得到一些利益後,即想進而獲得更多利益,比喻貪得無厭。Inch是1寸,而yard相當於3尺,這我裏們也可以用 mile(英里)來取代,其實意思都是指比1寸長很多的距離。

例句:If you let your classmate borrow your notes for a few days, he’ll end up keeping them for a year. Give him an inch and he’ll take a yard/ mile.

 

Look before you leap 三思而行

Leap是動詞,意思是跳躍,即是說在跳之前必須要小心看清楚前路,比喻要反覆再三考慮,然後才去做。

例句:Look before you leap because if this project fails, it will jeopardize(危及)the future of the company.

 

The walls have ears隔牆有耳   

隔牆有耳的意思是牆外可能有人偷聽,小心祕密會因此而外洩。

例句:Don’t say anything about our plans here in the classroom because the walls have ears.

 

Clothes make the man人靠衣裝      

人靠衣裝,即是說人的俊俏模樣要靠衣飾裝扮。這裏的 make,意思不是製造,而是成為、成就。

例句:I’ll buy a new suit to make a good impression at interviews. After all, clothes make the man.

 

Fish or cut bait 當機立斷

Fish作動詞的時候,即是釣魚,而 bait便是魚餌。這句字面的意思是要麼立刻釣魚,要麼就剪斷魚餌,比喻要抓緊時機,立刻作出決斷。

例句:The time has come when you have to fish or cut bait – decide whether you’re going to help us with the project or leave the team.

 

Nothing ventured, nothing gained 不入虎穴 焉得虎子

Venture的意思是冒險,而gain解作收獲。這句比喻如果不深入險境,就不能獲取勝利成功。

例句:They tried to make their products stand out, and they weren’t always successful, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

 

Have an ace up one’s sleeve 胸有成竹

這裏的意思是有留有一張王牌或錦囊妙計,對事情充滿信心。

例句:I don’t know much about the teacher’s plans but I think she has an ace up her sleeve.

 

Kill the goose that lays the golden eggs 殺雞取卵

顧名思義,這句的意思是把雞殺死,然後取出腹中的蛋來吃,比喻貪圖眼前微小的好處而損害更大的利益。英語的版本以goose(鵝)取代雞,其實同出一轍。

例句:If we sell the shares(股份)now, we could be killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.
